She trips the light luminous as she walks in. She chats away in that tinkly voice of hers. It’s like she’s taking in the whole world on all at once. She doesn’t want to miss a thing. Bookworm, diva, girl-next-door. She’s all that and more. And her Facebook status says she hasn’t slept for days. Uh oh. Wassup? She giggles tossing her long tresses over her shoulders. “I’ve been reading. One of my best friends, Cyrus Sahukar, gifted me the complete Oscar Wilde collection and I just finished reading The Picture Of Dorian
Gray. It kept me up all night. There’s a quote there that says, “Men get married because they are bored and women get married because they are curious and in the end both are disappointed.” She trails off into that tinkling laughter of hers again. She loves the classics. She remembers each and every character in every book she has read, she has a quirky, interesting take on the sexual Dynamics in Victorian novels, she corrects me when I get the ending wrong of one of her favorite ones (and mine) Jane Eyre. I make up my mind to go back and re-read the ending.
No wonder then that when debutant director Rajshri Ojha came to her with the idea of adapting Jane Austen’s Emma, Sonam jumped at it. “Emma is a comedy. It’s not even a usual classic. It’s about this matchmaking girl who doesn’t ever admit that this guy is perfect for her even though others can clearly see it. She only wants to fix other people’s lives instead of fixing her own. And who wouldn’t love Mr Knightly, the hero of the story?” she sighs. “He is the quintessential Jane Austen hero — strong, silent and ever protective.” Her excitement about this international project is evident. It’s supposed to be a typical date movie, a chick flick. “My two great loves fashion and movies... I get to indulge in both with aisha. This is my sister Rhea’s pet project, it’s her baby. It’s going to be an estrogen filled project,” she tells me with satisfaction.
I want to know if she’s a Miss-Fix-It in real life just like the famous character she is about to essay. Sipping her coffee, she nods in agreement. “Yup, that’s me. I have this desperate need to take care of everyone. It gives me self-validation. And I have control and organizational issues. Cyrus is constantly making fun of me. He says I am like Jack Nicholson inAs GoodAslt Gets. But it’s true, I have serious OCD(Obsessive compulsive disorder). Whenever I am upset I start folding things or cleaning up. If I am upset then I start arranging all the things in my room in alphabetical order. But the next time I am upset everything will be color coordinated. And the time after that it will be according to the genre. But the one really particular OCD I have is about bathrooms. I simply can’t share it with anyone. Some day, when I get married, my guy will have to get a separate bathroom. I think the key to a successful marriage is separate bathrooms,” she says with a hearty guffaw.
But marriage is a far off thought for this gorgeous 23-year-old. And from what she says, even a serious relationship is not something she craves at the moment. I m not looking out for a serious relationship. I’m too young. I want to have a good time and I want to date. And frankly there are no men left. Atleast not the type I like. I haven’t been in a serious relationship since I started working,” she reveals.
But then she has constantly been linked with various eligible hunks be it her Saawariya co-star and best friend Ranbir Kapoor, Kunal Kapoor or more recently her aisha hero Abhay Deol. “The Abhay Deol rumours are completely untrue. He is going to be my co-star in the film so we interact a lot. But I think we are too similar to fall for each other. We are both too bohemian and wild. We get along well and I hope we will be good friends,” she exclaims. Then she says in an offhand manner, “Besides, I’ve decided I don’t want to date an actor who is in Hindi Songs.” Err.. why not? “Because I have to work with them and any involvement of that sort can get really awkward. Maybe I will in the future when I quit acting and turn to writing and direction like I’ve always wanted to do.”
